What to do and what not to do - Ancillary

Final Music Video

MUSIC VIDEO COMPLETE!

We have met our deadline!
We exported our music video and labelled the file yellow.

Evaluation Question 1

What ways does your media products use, develop or challenge forms and convention of real media products?
focus on:

Mulvey
Laura Mulvey states that the audience is always looking through the male perspective; therefore women are dismembered and objectified in order to appeal to male audiences.  This is done through the choice of clothing, hair, setting etc. music videos place a great emphasis on representation of gender, especially of females for the male gaze.

When my groups and i were planning and creating the music video, we did not have any intention of following Mulvey's theory and incorporating the male gaze. this is because we wanted the focus to be on T-C as he is a new artist. Also, artists such as Wretch 32 do not have this aspect in their music videos. Therefore i did not do much research into Mulvey's work which could affect the music video.

Vernallis
Carol Vernallis had observed the camerawork and editing, and found that they match and move in time with the beat of the music. My music video follows this convention as the camera moves in time with the song and the video is a cut to the beat of the song; especially during the chorus.

i was heavily influenced by the original music video 'Forgiveness' by wretch 32 where the camera moves in time with the song and the video is a cut to the beat of the song; especially during the chorus.

Goodwin:According to Goodwin, music videos are built around the song itself and the artist plays the part of the narrator and character throughout the narrative. They often look into the camera to involve the audience.

He noted that one of three structures was followed: illustration, amplification or disjuncture. The music video I created followed a disjunctive structure, as the meaning of the lyrics was mostly ignored; however, at some parts the meaning of the lyrics were amplified which had challenged the disjuncture structure (eg street life, attending church).

This is how i used a disjunctive structure in my video

Aspects such as non-continuity editing, disjunctive narrative, bass tracks, artist looking directly into the camera and the visual matching the beat of the song are included within the structure of my music video.

for the ancillary, i completed some personal research which  influenced me. my group agreed on the colour of the synergy which is white and Gold/yellow. Below is one a example of synergy.

As you can see that both the music video and the cd cover have the main artists wearing the helmets which is being promoted and getting it across to more audiences as they recognise the logo.

Here is a digipak from an artist that i have analysed to show the conventions. This helps to know where the features should be positioned.

I also marked the soundwave more precise by double clicking on the original music video and then looking where the beat dropped which was really helpful as it helped me marking it more precise.

Last minute feedback

Before we finalised our music video, we decided to gain some more feedback. We also asked a non-media student for their opinion as they know what to expect from a music video and would not just point out the obvious flaws.

Production - Final Day

Today is the Final day of editing, so we all came in to edit and polish up our music video.

Upon gaining feedback from the rough cut from both Marissa and Louisa, we decided to step up our editing game (in a sense) and was in the editing suite for the majority of the week and last week.  This helped us to gain additional feedback whilst we made improvements at the same time. I missed a few days of editing because i was ill and my illness was contagious, however whilst i was there, which was from the begging of the editing and the end of it, i laid down the base tracks and all the shots, including the filler scenes and church reference shots and i also marked the Track which took about two and a half days of workshop and media lessons. I found editing quiet fun and challenging at times, with the stress of a deadline and of keeping up with my other coursework at the same time.

Feedback from Marissa today was very positive; she said that the music video looked complete which we were pleased to hear!

We received sufficient and helpful amount of audience and teacher feedback - some with contrasting opinions - so as a group we are currently discussing everybody's different opinions and deciding on what we are going to do, as it is group work after all.

Production: Last Day

Today is the last proper day of editing, so we all came in to edit and add final touches to our music video.

Our rough cut was one of the most incomplete music video in our class, so there was a lot of editing which was needed to be done for it to be upto A grade standard. I came into workshop and worked through to 4.30pm most of last week, which benefitted us as this had brought our music video upto scratch with everyone else's. I mainly worked on editing the chorus, which was a long process but improved the look of the music video vastly.

Progress Review Blog

Since the beginning of the As media year, my skills have developed to quite a far extent i believe. I have had to use technologies such as the Apple Macs which befofe city and islington were alien to me. i have also used technologies on the apple mac such as;

  • Blogger
  • Final Cut Pro
  • Camtasia (one of my favourites)
  • safari
  • Finder
  • Handbrake
  • and many more
i have also learned to use the VCR camera supplied by Candi. since last year ive learned how to use the camera to help me minipulate my shots, such as depth of field and focus. Also the variatioon of shots i could do with the camera also increased.

i believe my that my blog details the research, planning and construction stages fairly well. i think i could have put in a bit more work in the planning and the construction stages however, but that was inevitable due to time constraints and coursework deadlines, dissagreements within my group also.
im very happy with my overall work however, including my individual blogging in relation to the targets i previously set myself.

so far i have 66 blogs and i think this is suitable for the timebeing.

Ancillary products: We have decided to use the colour yellow and church references as a form of synergy in our cross media products; we have not yet taken pictures or discussed much ideas for how our ancillary products will consist of.

Research into editing (1)

I found that our music video looked a bit boring and was lacking something but wasn't quite sure what; audience feedback did help but I found that this was not sufficient enough. Therefore, I decided to look at other media student's work and see how I could intertextualise some of their ideas into our music video.

I realised that in our music video, we needed more contrast between light and dark; so I edited the lighting of the videos. I also added slow-motion to some of the footages in the usic video.

Production: Editing - Improvements & Updates

As we were reviewing the work we have done far, we had noticed a few areas of improvement ourselves. First of all, we will decided to add more edits in the chorus as the tempo of the song sped up. I strobed between two base tracks to add to the atmosphere, feel and energy of the music video. This required intense attention when listening for the beat of the song and marking it with precision.

I found this to be tedious, but it has helped improve the overall look and feel of the music video.

Reflection on rough cut

Helping others

Editing for A2 has proven to be a lot harder than expected for most people, including me. Luckily, I have gotten to grips with base track editing; therefore I have been helping a friend with his editing. This was helpful for me as I was helping to edit to a song with a different beat and atmosphere to my music video, which provided me with an insight into editing songs with different genres rather than just hip-hop.

I had fun working with him and learning some of his tricks too!

Independent Research! Editing a music video

Me and my group we`re struggling during lesson today into understanding base track and editing a music video the simple way. So I decided after lesson to go home and do some extra research and understand it more so I wouldn`t have to waste my editing times to re-cap from last year.

I went on YouTube to gain some help!

I watched a couple of videos but this video in particular gained my attention more as I felt I understood the way of editing a music video more.

Even tho I thought my level of knowledge of editing and experiences would have made me edit quicker and with less stress, I was wrong and over confident with it and this video hopefully helped me.

Reflection on filming (Skills Development)

Filming is complete!
Whilst filming, I had taken on the role of a director - telling the artists what to do and where to stand and filming. At first I thought it would be simple, however I found that this was slightly more difficult than expected. This is because due to lighting or settings, I could not always film as I wanted and would have to rethink/improvise. When reflecting on this, I feel that I should've more research and planning around filming rather than just finding locations and filming there.

From AS, I found that my filming skills have developed. This is because I had already experienced filming, therefore I was able to focus and film more accurately. The lighting aspect of filming did prove to be quite tricky as I did not come across this before; but I learnt to use lighting effectively.

Overall, the filming session went well and I am looking forward to editing.

Evidence of Re - Filming

The picture on the left shows Group 27's Video Drive which has all the Digital files saved onto it. This particular image shows one main folder however, which depicts the evidence of re-filming of the first and second verse and other shots such as extra shots which is named 'fillers' and other shots which illustrate the song such as church references.

Filming in Myddleton square

Quick checks before filming

journey to potential filming location in Leyton

Journey to FPK Location.

Edward square

Filming in Edward square with ashley.

This was a good filming day however the light started to flicker due to faulty equipment that i was given however i improvised and used my phone light as a replacement.

Prop shot - Additional filming

In this shot we see me filming one of my potential props on one potential location; my friend Ashley's stairs. The cameraman is my friend ashley's nephew. The prop is useful because it signifies religion and in this song my character is turning to forgiveness and religion is a source people turn to when seeking forgiveness.

Independent Research Eminem MMLP2

Mc Eminem is back with his new album MMLP2.

Eminem in an interview on TV talking about the album.

Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oe9QvYIstpQ

Part 2:

What I have seen throughout this task is that when an artist is having an interview whether he/she likes it or not, it doesn`t matter as doing interviews are as important as releasing good music for the fans. The more people see your face, it will mean the more albums will likely be sold. Having interviews  is a good way to get it across to a wider audience and also it could be watched by people who are unaware of you.

With the video featuring some parts of call of duty ghosts in the background.

I have also found that Eminem is part of a partnership with the new video game 'Call of Duty Ghosts.` This is called Synergy. The Wikipedia definition is: The interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the...: "the synergy between artist and record company."

Activition explains more about the partnership with Eminem which brought in 1 Billion in sales
